The immediate effects of nuclear exposure are depicted repeatedly and yet without fanfare, giving the feeling that this wasn’t gore for gore’s sake but instead an accurate depiction of what happens to the human body in such circumstances. But the terror came from more than just nuclear radiation exposure. It came from watching the ideological clash between scientists and the government, witnessing USSR leadership make decisions in direct opposition to scientists’ recommendations. It was utter anguish to watch their methods of denial, motivated by desires for convenience and for keeping up appearances. In a moment where climate change is somehow at the same time both a contentious political issue and an incontrovertible scientific fact, the suggestion of “opinion” with regard to damning scientific evidence nearly hit too close to home. In this way, Chernobyl seems to be perfectly suited for the times. In 2019 America, in addition to this tension around climate change, fear of nuclear weapons and the damage they can cause is never far from the political conversation. Neither is a deep mistrust of Russia, formerly the USSR. Whether Chernobyl stokes these fears or just happens to tell a true story that perfectly fits them is up for debate, but either way, this show is more than just history. The central human narrative is the tension between boffins and bureaucrats. Legasov, based at the Kurchatov Institute, Moscow, the Soviet Union’s main atomic research institute, is the man who first understood the scale of the disaster. In later episodes, however, we can expect to see him blamed by politicos, who disliked his appetite for speaking truth to the incompetents in power. So much so that he ends up hanging himself in the stairwell of his apartment on the second anniversary of the accident, shortly after telling his story to Pravda. This mini-series is brilliant and pointed storytelling, with gruesome early scenes of radiation sickness among the fire crews intercut with the local officials in their bunker, unwilling and unable to comprehend what was happening above them. Again, on the basis of the first two episodes, the story is told without taking too many liberties with the historical truth. Its main take is that the accident exposed as never before the callousness and dysfunction of the Soviet elite. And that by making this finally visible to Soviet citizens, it undermined the best of Communism, a sense of common purpose. The disaster replaced the common purpose with a sense of betrayal. It did not just symbolise the failings of communist rule, but precipitated its collapse. Early on, the series has Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev declaring angrily that the accident had to be kept secret because “our power comes from the perception of our power”. Chernobyl incinerated that perception, and their power was over. As he strung himself up, one imagines that Legasov already knew the truth. There's a new HBO drama about the core breach and fire at Chernobyl. The 2nd episode became available today. YouTube will provide you with all the documentaries and information you could possibly watch but this drama makes it real. Here is the story you need hear. There were huge water tanks under the reactor. They needed to be emptied before the core melted through and contacted them. If that had happened, the resulting explosion would have been between 3 and 5 megatons. It would have torn open the other reactors at the site and dispersed enough radiation to make the western Soviet Union and most of Europe uninhabitable. Three men volunteered to enter the flooded basement under the burning reactor to find and open the valves. They succeeded. They took high doses of radiation and some reports suggest they died but from what I can find it appears they survived the initial period of acute radiation sickness. Their names were Alexei Ananenko, Valeri Bespalov and Boris Baranov. They saved millions of lives and a continent. UPDATE: In the comments, the physics and math question of the potential size of the explosion is generating some thoughtful questions. Chernobyl 5 Episode.
“Chernobyl” is written by Craig Mazin and will be directed by Johan Renck. The limited series, which enters production next year, will be executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jane Featherstone and Craig Mazin, and co-executive produced by Chris Fry and Johan Renck. “Chernobyl” will be produced by Sister Pictures and The Mighty Mint as HBO and Sky Television’s first co-production under a new partnership. “From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told,” said Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming. “In Chernobyl, Craig Mazin has achieved something unique — his script is second to none, effortlessly combining the visceral, the tragic and the heroic perspectives behind this devastating event,” added Gary Davey, managing director, content, Sky. “The scale of the production makes it a perfect first project for our co-production partnership with HBO, encapsulating our ambition to develop high-end drama with international viewpoints and casting.
